Emerald Education

Emerald

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May.  Emerald is one of the beryl family, it is one of the loveliest of greens, and derives this color from the chromium and vanadium in its structure.  They come in a variety of different shades of green, ranging from light pale green to deep dark green.  The finest and most highly sought after color is rich, deep, dark green with good clarity and translucence.  They are mostly found in Columbia.  However most emeralds are mined in Africa, Brazil, Columbia, U.S.A, and other places in the world. It has a 7.5 hardness on the Moh's Scale, which is still acceptable as a durable gem for fine jewelry.  Because of its crystalline structure, emeralds are seldom ever without inclusions.  These inclusions are considered a part of the beauty of emeralds, along with its inner glow, which is legendary to the stone.

While some precious stones are likely to have more inclusions than others, stones such as emeralds are most likely to have more inclusions than almost all the precious and semi-precious stones.   Emeralds always has to have inclusions or little foggy/cloudy look that are visible to the naked eye.  Even the very high quality, extremely rare and very costly one, still have the inclusions in it, more or less. That's what makes the beauty and unique characteristics of this precious emeralds.  It's mother nature, there are no perfect emeralds.

In caring for emeralds, avoid ultrasonic cleaners or harsh cleansers that can damage its relatively soft surface.  Clean with a soft, damp cloth in cold windex or water, and a soft bristle brush if needed. This gem has been known to crack when exposed to extreme temperatures or impact, so please keep this in mind when wearing emeralds.

Most semi-precious and some precious stones you see today, everywhere are received some sort of enhancements such as irradiating, heating, or treating. These measures are considered safe and are endorsed by the American and International Association of Jewelers.
